the director of 11th hour asked me to ask you all that, if you plan to see the film, getting out to see it this first week would be really helpful. an unfortunate reality in the distribution and marketing of films, and cds for that matter, is that it is all about the opening week. how many folks see it in that first week can make or break a film or cd. herd mentality? yes. unfortunate reality? probably.
also for those in the l.a. area, i am doing steve jones radio program, on 103.1, with the two directors of 11th hour today (wednesday) sometime between 12-2pm. they also replay his segment at 6pm. and for you all outside radio range you can listen here on the web.

Hey,
Great stuff on indie, i am also getting greenier everyday, i just feel kinda guilty if i dont.
Cant wait to see the movie, and hopefully, the majestic politicians can do some more.
oh and.
I wanna see that napkin, and the great mother tit is gonna take care of everything.
Eric- great to see you and your talents hard at work. It's been a long time since you & I used to make those d to d passes when we played for Tony on the Sabres (Icoplex). I found some old photos-what a great time we had. Shane.
Hey all-
I decided if E can do physics I can learn to play. So I recently picked up the dust covered guitar in the corner of my studio and began to learn. However I feel I need some guidance, can anyone recommend a book from the library or a website. Any advice and or practice tips would be appreciated.
Thanks-
Ryan
To Anonymous, learn by yourself, the best guitarists in the world are self taught, same with me i am also self taught.
Dont read a book to play music.
Plunk around and learn tabs later
Eric,
Love the unreleased Polar Bear songs, especially Satellites, awesome tune. I plan to go see 11th hour perhaps tomorrow. Wife and I and little Avery are on a mini vaca right now (staying local, doing day trips here and there, just went to Sesame Place yesterday, life size Elmoes, pretty scary). We plan to take a movie in at some point, and 11th hour is at the top of my list. Question, and I'm sure you may have answered this before: are trained in music theory or do you hail from the self taught land and play by ear? I am self taught, alothough I had a couple of bass lessons back in the day. They weren't very inspriational though, so I am 99% self taught myself. How about you?
Thanks and talk soon amigo, Matt
Hi Eric, I know this is unrelated to your post but do you happen to remember what brand/model acoustic guitar was used for the recording of Ritual, the song "of course" in particular? Also I've always been curious as to why you guys opted to play an undistorted electric guitar instead of acoustic for most of the "clean" guitar parts. Considering the clean parts were so prevalent on that release.
Hi Eric
Satelittes & Superzero are great! I'm curious; were these recorded after Why Something? they sound a little more organic.
How did the session with Rich Costley come about?
also: are there any plans to release the 11th hour soundtrack?
best
Rich
george d- thank you sir. just for the record, i am not especially green.i have the requisite care for the earth (i stuck a floating tin can in my wetsuit and surfed it into the nearest trash can on the beach the other day) but i do not drive a prius and i believe the whole subject is more complicated than either 'side' would have us believe. dont get me wrong though, i am always on the lookout for wastefulness, greed, and out of control consumerism in my life and in my soul. because i am concerned about what it does to my life and my soul.
shane- hello shane. wow. tony was an intense guy. that was my first real experience with team sports. i wasnt one for any of that in high school.
unfortunately, years later, my back decided that i wasnt going to play ice hockey anymore.
i hope things are good for you.
ryan- i just found a songbook (this was of course pre-internet) that had diagrams for chords. then once i had a few chords to strum i just began strumming. just experimenting with how they all sounded going from one chord to the other; not unlike what i was doing earlier today.
matt volpe- i just answered this one in the previous post but i would add that the songbook i started wiht was a 'burl ives' songbook with yellowed edges.
dev- dont know for sure what brand of acoustics were used for the tracks you mentioned.
to answer your other question, i will say that i think a clean electric guitar and an acoustic guitar are two very different things. in other words, i dont think they are interchangeable. they generally serve very different creative purposes. unless i am doing an acoustic song, i tend to think of acoustic guitar as a filler or texture, not as a proper rhythm guitar.
rich- hard to answer your first question because the 'wsin' cd wasnt recorded like a proper cd. it was recorded as we wrote those songs and we eventually packaged it together into 'wsin'. alot of the tracks were the actual tracks that we plyed along live to.
whereas, satellite and superzero were done while we were flirting with slash records about signing us. they wanted to put us in a studio with a proper producer to see what would happen. that is how rich became involved. he wasnt nearly as fancy as he is now. he is a really talented guy. he has since done some really remarkable work; notably he did stuff with 'muse'.
yes. just got word that they are doing a soundtrack cd. dont know anything particular yet.
hey eric,
I here u and the beautifull bow player pete are making some art together!!
This is cool stuff, i would to here that music!! Have fun man!
Eric:
I'm sorry to hear about your back & I don't want to take away from your site. You can get me at captain_inshano@yahoo.com if you want to catch up (I found a team photo etc if you want a copy). Shane
ps don't you have my touching from a distance book still?!
Hi Eric.
I’m a self thought bass player (books help, internet exercises help, and as a tip consider that other people may have struggle to get to a level and they are willing to help you get there sooner. Do your research, practice doesn’t make you perfect but it helps if you are seriously planning to have fun); I recently got back together with my Old band “Mary La Aturdida” in Cd. Juarez México. Border town to El Paso Tx. Your previous performance with Janes Addiction is a big part of the inspiration for our music. And although I was previously a singer with the band, after we disbanded about 9 years ago I’ve since became a bass player and do no more singing with the band (having trouble doing both), from what I read in wikipedia, you are announced singing on Help Wanted.
Are you playing at the same time?
Have you always had this ability, or is it some thing you worked on? And, could you share your leanings?
Sorry for the long post, just trying to be clear…
I took a great deal away from this film; it's a must see. Unfortunately I am late to this game and most of what I got were more questions.
I began to mourn while watching it, much like watching my mother fail and then leave.
I can only partially digest the laymens versions of the likes of Hawking, Einsten, Weisskopf, and Burtt and their colleauges as I have always leaned towards the impact of science through the eyes of artists and philosophers.
That disconnect can be dangerous I suppose in the interest of Truth, but I did find this written by Einstein that promotes the integrity of science in light of the inevitable presupposition that is inherantly flawed.
"A quick look at the actual development teaches us that the great steps forward in scientific knowledge originated only to a small degree in this {inducive} manner. For if the researcher went about his work without any preconceived opinion, how should he be able at all to select out those facts from the immense abundance of the most complex experience, and just those which are simple enough to permit lawful connections to become evident?"
He finally defines this apparent dichotomy as an "eternal antithesis." He adds that there is a difference betwen "sense impressions" and "mere ideas" which is scientifically useless, but ultimately leads to usefullness because there is no other way.....
"Thinking without the positing of categories and concepts in general would be as impossible as breathing in a vacuum."
Finding the Truth in the matter of global warming is crucial, but I did take comfort in the "artistry" of the scientists in the film. They were quite the opposite of the mechanized and detached logic machine I was expecting. They were niether hysterical nor aloof....just placing the information in humanistic terms I could appreciate. Rather than running through the streets screaming "THE SKY IS FALLNG", they seem to mention it in passing and always added..."You might want to be aware of this because we are going to nee some help...Cool".
I also appreciated that religion was never assailed during the film. Considering their history, they will have o be an ally in this endeavor which will most likely be a precarious task for them.
Too, there were themes of the transcendentalists like Emerson and Thoreau that were screaming throughout the film.
Be well,
SR

For fuck's sake....The music was incredible Eric. Thanks.
george d- wow. how fast news travels. yes i am doing some bits with pete. he has a deal at a studio in the hills of malibu overlooking the coastline. pretty idyllic. enables us to have pre-teen fantasy days; wake up, drive up the coast, surf, rinse off at the car, get coffee, drive up the hill and spend the afternoon writing music. im glad, sometimes, that the universe isnt fair because i dont deserve half of the good fortune thats come to me.
shane- funny. i do still have your ian curtis bio. just saw it recently, in fact. still havent read it yet.
dorado- yes singing and playing bass at the same time does cross a persons eyes. i find it to be the most difficult of all the instruments to play and sing simultaneously. it may be because bass notes often move in a way that is similar to a melody line but the bass line, is at the same time, very different from the actual melody line. so you are asking the brain to use the same area for two different things simultaneously. dont know. practice practice practice.
sr- questions on this topic are good. we do not have this topic figured out and once a topic gets this much media attention, one has to wade through reams of bogus bullshit as well.
it sounds like your experience of 11th hour was similar to mine. i found its greatest strength to be the power of its imagination; its poetry. knowing the directors, it is not a surprise that the film uses smarts and science to spark the imagination. i often find it frustrating that most folk cant see the obvious beauty in the truths that science illuminates, and that beautys most enduring symptom: wonder.
Thats really cool, is there any way us listeners will be able to get a glimpse or hear what you to are working on.
P.S. Have you ever listened to The Smiths? i got into joy division and the smiths right at the same time about a month ago, its what im listening to right now non stop.
Sooo Good.
Peace
george d- smiths? joy division? ive done countless hours with the both of them.
Yea those two bands really got me right now.
Funny thing is i listened to joy division about 6 months ago. and thought they sucked, but then a month ago i did it again, and that time it just stuck with me. I guess a person has to be in the right mood to enjoy certain music.

Eric,
I'm sorry this is unrelated to the post, but I thought I'd share this commercial with you and all here on the blog. My boss just passed it along to me. You seem to have a great sense of humor and this spot is really hysterical. Hope you enjoy it. Apologies if you've already seen it.

BTW, awesome to hear you and this person Pete are making some music together. I'm not sure who the Pete is (Distefano by chance?), but the scenario you wrote sounds like the perfect way to brew some tunes. Look forward to hearing that if it is going to be being put out.
Best, Matt
I think your feeelings were evident in the Stanford's scientists disposition. His frustration seemed to border on the indignant, which I appreciated a great deal. I have always maintained that anyone with half a heart or half a brain must possess a moderate level of indignance in this world. The wonder you speak of seems to instill a much more positive message when viewed individually, but for me the awe that science and Natural law inspires is a;ways followed by measure of indignance when our values/interests are introduced to the mix.
It all reminds me of the quote, "I would rather sit on this pumpkin alone than on a crowded velvet couch."
Be well,
SR
I found some photos of the killer studio, Oh... what a lucky man!!!

Hey Greorge-
Is that you getting in the pool on the Monkey video?
no, i can swim :D
g-
I don't understand? Did you make the video or is this an EA creation?
No i didnt create the video i just posted it on youtube for people to enjoy, i dont know who made it? If my memory serves me correctly which it usually does, it was a video for that song but the song was originally called Car or somthing like that.
Mr Avery will know the answer to this puzzling question
Hi Eric,
Have you heard of the book "This Is Your Brain On Music" by Dan Levitin? Where Nueroscience and Music are discussed mutually. Don't want to be a spoiler so I will refrain from mentioning any of the contents. From reading your posts, I think you may like this one. Would be interesting and fun to discuss.
Off topic, anyone here read "Shantaram" by Gregory Roberts? Fucking. Rad. A trancsending book that Depp is now making into a movie.
With respect and kindness,
Mike

Mr. Avery
I was in Mexico during the time that you did this interview, is there anyway to find the interview? An mp3 or a youtube link would do great. Thanks
Also, how many songs do you think from Jane's Addiction and Deconstruction where never released and what are the chances that they ever will? I know I could use some more music.
eric, long time no post! can we have an update on your recording? thankss
Yes Please!!!
January is coming soon, but i and everyone else would love to hear news about whatever is goings ons.
any chance of a polar bear reunion in the future? -n
e-
You still with us?
ryan
dear Eric,
please get out of the water and come here, tell some stories, play some new tunes.
A little homework then you can get back to surf.
:-)
did you know this face is 25 y old?!
matt- it is indeed peter distefano. he and i knew were boyhood friends in santa monica in tenth grade.
ryan- that is the studio. pretty insane. i definitely feel a little uptown when im there.
the video you and george are talking about was put together by the artist greg gibbs. he did a few films so we could project them behind polarbear while we played. i remember that pool guy. is there audio attached to the film?
mike- it was you that mentioned shantaram. how funny. i was having a book browse the other day and i couldnt and i stumbled upon that book. i mentioned it to my wife, she is a depp fan, but i couldnt remember who recommended it to me. i didnt pick it up because i already had my book but i put it on reading list. thanks.
anonymous- i dont know what interview you are speaking of. i dont have any interviews of mine, though, so im afraid i couldnt help you anyway.
all decon songs were on the cd. and to the best of my knowledge, janes put out the extra janes songs on 'kettle whistle'. at least those are the only ones i can remember.
andy- things are slow for me right now workwise. i am giving a song, "all remote and no control", to the dj jason bentley who is going to do a remix for me. that is the next order of business.
n- i try never to say never, but i think a polarbear reunion is unlikely. i am going to see biff for the first time in a long while. i plan on asking him if playing polarbear songs is even physically possible anymore. are the loops and samples even still on a hard drive somewhere. im curious.
