stole over to the hammer museum this afternoon while i waited for belle (who was reclining in a dentists chair). show was missable but i spent the hour browsing their bookstore. i struck by how many great ideas are contained in any collection of books like that one. i was also reminded of just how important it is that we make things that are totally unnecessary. there have been years, even before the years of gw bush and friends, where mostly conservative folk have had contempt for art that, according to them, has no 'purpose'. they believe that the marketplace, not tax dollars, should fund art. but i would argue that that by definiton is a market. it creates commodities and the exchange of commodities. that is fine as well but its different. it is in the moments when we contemplate unnecessary things that we transcend our daily lives. i believe we, especially americans, need more of this kind of time. and personally, for a believer in truth, reality, and rationality that sort of time is the closest experience i have to magic.

Dave should definitely record an album with Corgan's group, IF they can keep it loose and natural, as opposed to giving everything a lifeless metal sheen. They sound surprisingly good.

Billy Corgan is a good artist and obviously very intelligent. Lets hope his new project continues in this new direction

What a suprise to see BC resurrecting a Grateful Dead number. Fun.
Dig that he is not hiding behind a wall of distortion and the garden variety of synth beats like so many guys do.
Granted the cover tunes he presented is miles away from his background and anything else in his career but at least he is keeping it real.
Got to give him credit for looking to nature for influence and to bypass the technological gimmicks.

To be fair to the dumbass, Corgan & co. did perform the song with Dead-like touches, and were likely influenced by the Grateful Dead version, which is the best-known version.

However, I still like to give credit to the original songwriter. It had been recorded a number of times by different artists before the Dead added it to their live set.

Another example is "Hard To Handle." People think the Black Crowes wrote it. Then, if they're lucky, they hear the Dead version from much earlier, and say "oh, The Dead wrote it," when in fact it is a song originally recorded and co-written by the great Otis Redding. Also reminds me of the song "Respect." People think Aretha Franklin wrote it. They hear Otis Redding's version and think it's a cover, when in fact Otis Redding was the writer and the first to record it.

Pop Music Review
Corgan in good spirits at friend Saxon's tribute

By Nina Garin
Union-Tribune Staff Writer
September 1, 2009

Corgan and crew performed lovely, acoustic-driven songs complete with three-part harmonies and instruments as diverse as a violin, organ, flute and tambourine.
The complex arrangements showed Corgan as a more sophisticated songwriter than you might expect. There may be more in his musical future than Angst-driven rock songs and Smashing Pumpkins reunion shows.
Even when the show got loud during the band's cover of Pink Floyd's “Lucifer Sam,” there was still something refined and mature about the five-minute jam. The 15-song set was mostly a mix of obscure covers and new material. It was heavy on soft sounds, almost New Agey. Still, the crowd was riveted.
“It was totally worth it,” said Bay Park's Tim Bollisch of the $50 tickets he found on Craigslist. “I would have paid more. Billy Corgan is still writing great music.”

The mood in the room full of 20- and 30-year-olds was so casual that even Corgan interacted with the crowd. He was chatty and took questions all night.

At one point, a bit of Corgan's difficult side did emerge.
Early in the set, he asked the audience to sing along to his new song, “Widow Wake My Mind.”
It wasn't loud enough.
“This ain't gonna get me back to the arena,” he said.
He started over, but then the band messed up. It took four tries to get that song the way he wanted.
So, yeah, maybe Corgan is a perfectionist. But if it makes for magical concert experiences like this, who's going to complain?

Small tip in reference to your recent writing blocks. If one listens to good inspiring music it will most likely enable him or her to write good quality music.

You see, Perry listens to absolute garbage electronica so he is not inspired to make anything great. Put Garbage in get Garbage OUT. That seems to be the way it works. If Perry actually listened to Cabinet Of Curiosities instead of nonstop Britney Spears and Daft Punk he would succeed.

When we have an earnest willingness to change and let the light consume us, there is only love ahead. I guess there is always a third road, one of devout faith and meditation, a sober man's way to enlightenment.

Be patient.

We must keep reminding ourselves of this...

we are far from exempt of that third road though. if we don't want to fall back, its exactly that road one must embark upon.

There are no real shortcuts to enlightenment. We can ask for directions though; and perhaps get a glimpse of what lies ahead, to keep one going (or get one started).

Now go and listen to Flower Quartet "Remembrance" and ponder..

The only thing I don't like about the Navarro & Corgan band is the drummer. He puts too much heavy handed emphasis on the downbeat. Thats fine for heavy metal but if you want to go floating away on clouds and rainbows the drummer needs to play lighter and more relaxed and let the hand percussionist do more of the work. Stephen Perkins would be good in that spot.

You say the others suck, but I think you just don't know them well enough. You list Zeppelin as being good, but you suggest Muddy Waters sucks, although he was a huge inspiration to them to the point that they ripped off his music multiple times. The Stones worshipped Muddy Waters to the point that they NAMED THEIR BAND AFTER HIS SONG. Unlike Zeppelin, they had the decency to credit his songs ands influence, and perform with him, at which time even narcissist attention hog Jagger laid back:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydspyNjoIp0

Sam Cooke doesn't even come close to sucking. Listen to Live at the Harlem Sq. Club. Lou Reed, whose band you listed as being good, said that he didn't know how anybody could live without this album Also listen to Night Beat. Listen to A Change Is Gonna Come. Sam Cooke is was hugely influential to most of the other artists you listed. Shit, just listen to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdkzMlTVHaA

You suggest Bo Diddly sucks, but he was revered and covered by several of the artists you list as being good. Covered by The Doors, The Stones, and fuck knows who else:

Who Do You Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAGoqMZRLB4

You list Little Richard as sucking, but likewise he was a huge influence to jsut about all the artists you list, especially The Beatles and Stones.

Otis Redding sucks? LOL! Then you list a wishy-washy namby pamby act like Simon and Garfunkel? Otis Redding was a fucking maniac powerhouse. Nothing against those two little momma's boys, but Otis would've bitten their heads off.

You've basically just listed artists who are more famous to mainstream rock fans. I'd check out some of the other people in a more in depth manner.

No one has answered this question, why's Perry Farrells voice so much lower now? Is because he can't sing high or cause the guitar>bass is downtuned.

BTW-I do not like downtuned Jane's and not be able to hear Erics mighty bass cut through because he plays too low like grunge nu-metal people.

Anonymous said...

^
Another brainless comment, what's your point?

Anonymous said...

^
^
^

Singer's voices get lower as they age, and Perry is no different. It's not really a "question," as everybody already understands this fact. It happens to all singers, even trained opera singers.

There was no choice to play lower. If these guys could go back to their regular tuning, they'd do it in a heartbeat. There's no denying that most of the material sounds worse in a lower key. It gets to sound muddy and plodding. This is not to say that they do not play well. They do play well. It's just that they've got to cater to Farrell's seriously diminished voice.

Anonymous said...

You can still hear and feel the bass guitar you just can't always distinguish the notes he's playing (or tell exactly what its doing) so its more like a presence and not a defined tone like say, Joy Division or Jane's '86-91. I think he distorts it now sometimes as well so that would change things a lot. I think he's shooting for an industrial metal sound, not my cup of tea. His bass tone on "Chicken Bone" isn't bad but still not like old Jane's which was near perfect.

Anonymous said...

^
MOre likely to do with low quality youtube vids not picking up the bass freq

The sound Reznor slapped on "Whores" is expired anyway. 1994-1997 NIN/Marilyn Manson sound is dated and that's what it sounds like.

Eric Avery's debut solo album Help Wanted is a fence rider. By the time it was all over I didn't really get a sense of what direction the music was trying to go. Instead, I was greeted by an assorted mix of songs with the only identifiable commonplace being the unmistakable style of Avery's vocals. I was also disappointed in some of the bass licks. Being a bass player with a deep resume, I was looking forward to hearing some interesting lines. Unfortunately, I was mostly let down. This could be a creative decision however, so it would not be fair to knock him for it. Overall, this album is ok. It's probably not worth purchasing on just a whim. After all, what's in a name?

Eric Avery
Help Wanted

Though there are some well-written pieces, utilizing a wide range of strings, synths, and drum machines, I just can’t shake the feeling that this album already sounds dated. The production and style (namely the guitar sound) screams mid-’90s all the way. Not that there’s anything terribly wrong with that; it’s just not exactly pushing the envelope here in 2008. I’m sure longtime followers will take away a lot of positive vibes from this album, but I don’t see a whole lot of new fans coming along.

Perrys vox were above average on "Whores" and "Chip". Nice reverb, delay there. Not as high as he used to but not bad. He can't pull it off live at all but on tape he can do ok.

DAVE NAVARRO: You know, I’ve known Billy for many years and I’ve never had the opportunity to play music with him. So this is truly an honor. So, I’m honored, I’m grateful and I’m extremely proud of what we’re doing

I hope Corgan stays with the name of the group, calling it Spirits In The Sky. The Smashing Pumpkins name is a 90's thing and will always be associated with that period and not anything new or charting new territory. The Smashing Pumpkins moniker is like an anchor holding everything back in my opinion. Plus if Dave stays in the band it would be fitting to keep the new name.

Soft shit is really one long, mostly continuous sausage before it comes out. It gets its "link" look because we tend to pinch off lengths of it with the anal sphincter as the shit emerges. If a person pinches hard enough, the shut separates into several shut units. If the person doesn't pinch that hard, the shit may stay connected. If you can remain sufficiently relaxed, you can produce an awesomely long shit that will coil up inside the toilet.

Why don't Eric and Dave sing some background vocals along with Perry live? His voice sounds so weak and strained nowadays so Eric and Dave could prop him up a little. By themselves Eric and Dave are not great singers but in a backing context they could do fine and dandy. I wouldn't mind hearing them do some covers well outside their comfort zone like anything from 1964-1973, when the best music was being made.

An estimated two million conservatives, fed up with runaway government spending marched on Washington, DC today and delivered a resounding “no” to a proposed nationalization of the American health care system.

Eric's bass is sharp, high pitched and carries the melody

Steve's drums are light, poly tribal

Jane's Addiction
release 2010 -

The new album from Jane's Addiction, first release in a long seven year wait, is quite a pleasant surprise! These guys have left the 80's metal antics behind and are charting new territory. The guitars and vocals have an otherworldy touch, they sing like a daydream. Dynamic, tribal, folk rhythms push the energy gently.
Avery, Navarro, Farrell and Perkins create blissed out musical voyages deep into the 4th dimension. They seem to be estatic when picking up where the gorgeous "Summertime Rolls" and "My Time" have left off!
The elements paint a masterpiece of an homage to a bygone era that is not merely being recreated to glorious effect, but sounds as though it never went away.

Anonymous said...

^
Thats not going to happen. They never played My Time and had to be coerced to play Summertime Rolls on tour this year. These guys are bent on ramming the Trent Reznor industrial metal up your ass and leave it there till it rots.

Pedro Picapiedra said...

Correct me if I´m wrong but these guys as Jane´s Addiction have not made new music since late 1988...cause I have a lot of bootleg gigs and the only songs that I have not register during that time live(86-88) are Of Course, Stealing and So What...those first two are played during 1990 and 1991, "So What" I just don´t know when it was made...my point is I don´t know if they got in them to write new music like on those days.

What do you think Eric?

Spirits in the Sky members (Dave Navarro?) are now on the scene in Chicago where they are working on a new record.

Over the past few days working with master engineer Bjorn Thorsrud we nailed a killer drum sound and just started dialing in the bass a guitar tones. It all starting to sound very exciting.

Billy Corgan turned to Vintage King sales representative Darrin Fendley for advice on outfitting his new Chicago area facility with a wide selection of top-notch vintage and new recording equipment. The list included a wide array of outboard gear, microphones, converters, Pro Tools, and three rare vintage recording consoles: An EMI 24 channel TG12345 series desk, a Trident B-Range 12 channel sidecar [ed. maybe like this one?] that was ‘Premium VK Restored’ by Vintage King’s expert tech staff and a vintage 70’s Helios console, which is currently undergoing a Premium Vintage King restoration.

Bandleader Billy Corgan is giving it another shot with the launch today of EverythingFromHereToThere.com, a mandala-crowned “collective of thoughts about spirituality and the greater good of life in general.”

Self-esteem was the best single predictor of depression. The results support previous findings with younger children and high school students by demonstrating that sex-typed characteristics in adolescents are significantly associated with depression, although this relationship is accounted for by the variance shared with self-esteem, a more general measure of mental health. However, the presence of negative feminine-typed characteristics was as highly correlated with depression as the absence of positive masculine characteristics and both relationships were stronger for females than males.

Anonymous said...

Masculinity is associated with self-esteem, body satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction. Androgynous and masculine subjects are generally similar and well adjusted; whereas feminine and Undifferentiated subjects were similar and less well adjusted. Results are interpreted as evidence for the adaptive nature of changing female sex roles.

RELATIONSHIPS said...

RELATIONSHIPS

In Perry's relationship his wife plays the male dominant role and he acts as the submissive female. It works for them. But a real man would not enjoy being dominated by a man in a woman's body like ELF.

In Dave's past relationships he took on the responsibilities of a man and lead. His wives were envious of this power and tried to strip it from him and rule him like a male. Dave is not gay per se and would allow himself to be belittled and feminized like PF. So his marriages didn't work.

Our culture has been chick-a-fied over the last 40 years. It has moved from a Patriarchal society to a Matriarchal in which strong masculine males are demeaned and taught to feel guilty for their masculinity in popular culture. Feminism plays a central role.

New album, BC said...

Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan took the uncommon step today of publicly committing his band to deliver the music of an enormous and as-yet-unrecorded (though largely written) album, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, in a variety of specific formats. He writes:

My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. … We will however sell highly limited edition EP’s (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EP’s will be made available are still being worked out. … When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EP’s need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces.

Corgan also addressed the album’s music and themes:

The story of the album is based on ‘The Fool’s Journey’, as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic.

The music…harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.

“The Fool’s Journey” is a modern interpretation of the 22 uniquely named cards that comprise the trump suit in the Tarot, a pack of playing cards that dates to the late Middle Ages. Those who have articulated the “Journey” concept — including psychedelic-movement icon Timothy Leary — associate stages in life with each card, beginning with the first card (named “The Fool” and often numbered zero) and ending either with the 22nd card (“The World”) or back again with the first card. Here is one example of how the cards can be associated with stages in life, here is a second, and this page from the latter site is much too amusingly coincidental not to link.

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them..

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 535 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country

Do not let these 535 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 535 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Clothes are silly and can get really obnoxious; everything would be so much nicer and more comfortable without them.
Standing on top of a huge hill overlooking an entire city while listening to Pink Floyd feels amazing.
Running down such a hill while listening to The Beatles feels almost as amazing.
Plants are really cool and they're like, higher beings of some sort; people should appreciate this and try to communicate with them.
Our perceived "reality" is nothing but a miniscule fragment of "true" existence. There is an inconceivable number of perceptions and experiences beyond possible human imagination and our measley human senses of touch, taste, hearing, sight, and smell. Our whole universe that we live in day-to-day, albeit complex in itself beyond our wildest dreams, is just a tiny speck in all that there truly is to be found.

Military Police Kidnap G20 Protester, Shove Him Into Unmarked Car

Pittsburg, Sept 24,2009

It’s a shocking scene that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the streets of Nazi Germany or Maoist China in humanity’s darkest historical period – a protester is shoved into an unmarked car by military thugs and driven away to whatever Godforsaken fate awaits him. And yet this is America in 2009, where the First Amendment is now officially a criminal offense and people who dare exercise it are attacked and abducted by military police in broad daylight.

Question: Can we expect new songs from Jane’s Addiction (sooner or later..)? I so wish for that.

Dave Navarro: "I honestly can’t say if it will be soon or late, but yes!"

Please allow me to interpret DN's quote. We would like to make new songs but everyone wants to do their own thing. We are no time schedule in this band and when we get around to making new songs like we promised we may all be well into our 50's. Because everyone knows the older you get the better music you can make so why not wait? Perry insists on pumping out generic impersonal electronic. Eric insists on pumping out something that will arouse Trent Reznor's boner. I am ready to write songs with these guys but they can't agree on anything except the colour of toenail polish they should wear in the studio.

I don't think they made that much from the tour cuz they had to split profits w/nin and JA had an expensive stage setup. What profits there were prob in t-shirt sales. I hope they took whatever $ they made and reinvested it in the band like some vintage analog gear, studio time, marketing plans, website improvement, ect. Perry is the weak link, not eric/dave/perk.

Listen closely young ones... many things happen to you as you approach age 50. One of the biggest is that your body seriously begins to decrease its output of testosterone. This is serious business, hon, without testosterone, you no longer can do all those things that overcompensated for your female side... sports decline, sexual appetite for women declines, you stop working out, you stop feeling like a man, and you stop feeling that you should continue to act like a man. And your feminine side explodes in the vacuum left behind. You dress more often, you take more chances, you buy more clothes, you see more men... you become more of a woman, physically, mentally, spiritually, and sexually. The stop-gap measure you have been hiding behind for so many years simply disappears... you are in trouble. But there is more...
