stole over to the hammer museum this afternoon while i waited for belle (who was reclining in a dentists chair). show was missable but i spent the hour browsing their bookstore. i struck by how many great ideas are contained in any collection of books like that one. i was also reminded of just how important it is that we make things that are totally unnecessary. there have been years, even before the years of gw bush and friends, where mostly conservative folk have had contempt for art that, according to them, has no 'purpose'. they believe that the marketplace, not tax dollars, should fund art. but i would argue that that by definiton is a market. it creates commodities and the exchange of commodities. that is fine as well but its different. it is in the moments when we contemplate unnecessary things that we transcend our daily lives. i believe we, especially americans, need more of this kind of time. and personally, for a believer in truth, reality, and rationality that sort of time is the closest experience i have to magic.

I've been thinking about this a lot: art and economics. I'm reading Lewis Hyde's "The Gift - Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World".

Some things can not be sold, and when we try to sell them, something is lost. Some things, when given as gifts, increase.

Hopefully, one of the byproducts of the current financial crisis will be the widespread realization that the marketplace is not the be-all-end-all decider of the good.

-ea. said...

mtto - ive said roughly the same thing about the financial crisis. i have friends who believe (believed?) that the marketplace left to its own devices was somehow almost moral in its darwinian selection process. chills me.

Eric, in your friends defense, I think it was taught to us as children of the cold war era that capitalism is the best at everything and is the same as freedom. It is a hard mindset to break.

Why shouldn't tax dollars pay for something subjective?

Are art and culture important to a society? Why do I even have to ask that question?!?

Collectively, we need to maintain some things: national parks, museums, orchestras, for example. You might not like Van Gough and Beethoven, but hopefully you can admit their work should be maintained even though it doesn't generate as much revenue as Top 40 radio.

If Alan Greenspan can admit that he was wrong about the marketplace, everyone else should be able to as well.

The point isn't to get rid of the marketplace. The marketplace is really good at some things.

The system we have in the usa is called "monopoly capitalism". We do not have a true free market economy.

"Monopoly capitalism" tends to destroy "true capitalism" which is
defined as having "free enterprise" and "competition".
'Monopoly capitalism" tends to increase and concentrate both economic
power and political power in a few individuals and entities.
"Monopoly capitalism" tends to impoverish the general citizenry of a
nation.
"True capitalism" or "free enterprise" competitive capitalism tends to both increase general wealth and distribute
it and political power more widely amongst the general citizenry.

I feel the marketplace has an unhealthy hold on the people of this country. People are zombiefied. They are told what to like and told what to buy. Marketplace may have some good to some extent, I agree, but I think people overall should learn to think for themselves and decide themselves what is good for them.

To have a think about things like this do definitely change up the daily normal routine of life. Thanks Eric.

Eric and all art lovers, please do all you can to support art in public schools! Funding sucks. I'm a teacher and am always shocked at how little knowledge my students have of the humanities. They crave it in ways they can't express. When exposed to it, there is always a spark. always. So please, please do all you can to give kids the arts!
I want my tax dollars to go to giving children an well rounded education and that includes art for art's sake (and literature)

Very nice post and I agree we need more contemplative time. We as Americans are rushed, overworked and artistically undernourished. I always liked the phrase, "Turn On, Tune In and Drop Out". I think we need a 30-35 hour work week like some European nations.

Getting off topic for a second, your song "Animals" is magnificent. Its just you and your acoustic guitar, very personal and intimate and vulnerable-the unique qualities sorely missed in the current technological music climate. I would'nt complain if you were to produce an entire collection of songs in that exact fashion. Thanks for reading.

Eric The question is would we learn?

History shows human beings are the only animals who keep making the same mistakes over and over.

This last regarding "The market place" cause ultimatly it has no moral...so in the end it´s all about education.

Still there´s no guarantee that educated people would make the market place a "better place".

Educated people have failed at perfecting the market, and educated people elected twice an "Un- educated president" so much for Yale and Harvard... W.Bush

By the way saw W. yesterday...and my final remark on the movie would be that Oliver Stone lack of courage to put Bush on the spot....on 9-11,Katrina and Irak.

spectacular. this band hailing from Liverpool ENGLAND took a Jane's Addiction song and made it sound vastly superior. they added hand drum, twin acoustics, maracas, tambourine and a vocalist who sounds almost exactly like Perry Farrell with a touch of Noel Gallagher(Oasis). Clearly THEY have been reading the comments on this blog and THEY got wise. Good work guys! Keep it UP!! Eric, give this vocalist a call when Perry misbehaves.

To anonymous who commented on my comment - I wholeheartedly agree- television is a big culprit in dismantling the focus people have to think what they really want for themselves. The media in general is digusting in that way. There are some good the media may do, but I feel the cons out weigh the pros big time.

Beware, Internet 2 said...

the establishment is quietly working behind the scenes to do away with the internet in its current form.

The first wave will simply attempt to price people out of using the conventional Internet and force people over to Internet 2, a state regulated hub where permission will need to be obtained directly from an FCC or government bureau to set up a website.

The original Internet will then be turned into a mass surveillance database and marketing tool. The Nation magazine reported, "Verizon, Comcast, Bell South and other communications giants are developing strategies that would track and store information on our every move in cyberspace in a vast data-collection and marketing system, the scope of which could rival the National Security Agency.

According to white papers now being circulated in the cable, telephone and telecommunications industries, those with the deepest pockets--corporations, special-interest groups and major advertisers--would get preferred treatment. Content from these providers would have first priority on our computer and television screens, while information seen as undesirable, such as peer-to-peer communications, could be relegated to a slow lane or simply shut out."

We see a move to demonize the Internet and tar its reputation. AOL is running ads equating Internet users with terrorists. In the next few years we may see a staged Internet shutdown which is blamed on cyber terrorists.

For the aspiring dictator, the Internet is a dangerous tool that has been seized by the enemy.

I did not enjoy that cover of "Just Because." They took a middling acoustic performance of a middling song and made it even weaker.

Of all the songs out there they could have covered, and all of the musical things they could be doing, they did THIS, and I'm supposed to be...impressed? No.

Anonymous said...

^
i respectfully disagree. the version you heard is superior and u know it

Anonymous said...

^
It's not all that respectful to try to tell me what I think, now is it? I'd like to respectfully repeat that I don't like either version, but that the acoustic version by The Stays was marginally superior. Doesn't matter though, for in the end it's like the difference between warm shit and cold shit.

As far as I'm concerned it's middling, boring, uncreative, mainstream, easy listening soft rock. There's no spark to it. It's musical Wonder Bread to me. This is my honest opinion with no animosity towards anyone who may have a different experience.

I'm the poster you responded to.

I take your comment as a joke, but perhaps you really don't have a grasp on the truly wide world of music out there. That would be very sad.

You're right about one thing; I would rather hear the Sex Pistols. I don't want to listen to them, but I liked them when I was 14, and they're far more interesting than the boring radio rock of Strays. If I were forced to choose, it would be "Holiday In The Sun" over "To Match The Sun" every time.

Good day.

watch Perry's new video

If you watched his video you can see he has embraced the Paris Hilton extravagent lifestyle. His words reveal the shallowness of his goals in the remaining years of his life: party, live it up and rub it in your face. This is where your Janes Addiction and Lollapalooza ticket dollars are going to support. All I can say is if the old Perry Farrell saw the video he would be turning over in his grave.

lyrics from the new song entitled, "I like em big"

We're gonna have fun
Etty and me head way out west
2 champagne glasses and a private jet
never had a lover who loved me more
never had a lover who showed me more
shes a singer and a dancer and so much more
she lets you take a picture behind closed doors
i like em big
the camera loves you hun

Anonymous said...

I love Perry, but as nice as Etty seems to be, her style, and her influence as Perry's muse, has been artistically destructive. Perry's happy and healthy, and that's great, and I think that's a testament to Etty's positive qualities. Unfortunately she's got shit taste, and Perry's work always reflects the influence of his women.

Ultimately the marketplace will determine the success or failure of Farrell's solo music. He can make all the cheesy, low class videos he wants. No one is listening or buying. PERRY FARRELL

This one’s trickier—there was a time when this sun-baked California-raisin was a real contender. The Jane’s Addiction years produced the classic albums Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual. His follow-up band Porno for Pyros, was a worthy second act. In the ’00s, though, Farrell’s a clown. Jane’s Addiction’s 2003 reunion album Strays was a slab of transparently stupid cock-rock, and his project, Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party, shovels every hippie-bullshit SoCal cliché you can think of into one big pile of musical dung.

VERDICT: Should’ve gone out in 1997, high on acid, riding a flaming motorcycle across the Mojave Desert. (MH)

History of Jane's Addiction

by anony mouse

1986
pf picks a bundle of fresh shrooms from a cowpattie and swallowed them hole. the mushroom bestowed upon him a special gift and told him to start a band called ja. the mushroom explained the band would bring him good fortune.

1991
ja breaks up. pf returned to the same fecal pile where a fresh batch of shrooms resided. he ate them. on his trip the mushroom told him to start a band and call it porno for pyros.

1997
p4p breaks up. pf heard the mushroom spirit calling to him. pf returned to the same fecal cow pasture and feasted on the magic mushrooms that were waiting for him. this time the mushroom told him to reform p4p. he argued with the mushroom spirit and got angry and told it to fuck off. he told the mushroom he was a god and knew better than anyone else. the mushroom took away the gift it had given to him and disappeared into the foggy woodlands.

2003
pf returned to the cowpattie but to his dismay there were no mushrooms waiting for him. he cursed the mushroom spirit. he wrote an album and called it strays. he knew it sucked because his special gift was gone.

2005
etty told him to make satellite party. after he wrote it he knew it sucked because his special gift was gone. despite that he proclaimed himself to be the DoGstar- God-star. the album was a failure and condemned by fans and critics alike.

2009
etty told him to make a new ja record with averys help. he returned to the fecal pile fertilized it with his own golden stream of urine. he prayed for the mushroom spirit to give him shrooms to eat. there was no answer. no shrooms did grow on the shit pile. he cursed the ground cuz he realized he would fail again.

Without a master producer(not Reznor) Dave and the other 2 boys(except for Eric) will think whatever music they make will be the best thing since sliced bread. They thought Panic Channel was awesome and Perry obviously is proud of Satellite Party.

As far as electronic music is concerned, the Beatles were using tape loops and primitive electronic gadgets way back in 1966. What they were able to accomplish (under the influence of LSD) dwarfs most electronic music of today. If you can't improve on what they did don't even try.

Eric Avery tried to get new Jane's music started. He was on the right track using odd time signatures and a left of center approach we like. Guess who stepped in and shot it all down? Guess who wanted to make it mainstream and lame?

Hey Perry

Next time if you want to give your gay "supergroup" idea some legitimacy at least find a musician who is not some top 40 dork like Joe Perry. Lou Reed was there at Lollapalooza he would have been ok. Flea, Keidis, Jack Johnson, Daniel Ash and a number of others would have been ok. But guys like Joe Perry, Slash, Jason Bonham, Nuno, Billy Idol. These guys are lame. Very lame. Do we even have to tell you this? We shouldn't have to tell you this.

Your well intentioned argument is undercut by the mention of no-talent douchebag Anthony Keidis.

Mr Avery,
I was just listening to Blue Oyster Cult 'Don't Fear The Reaper' and I thought of you. The song is obviously very dark and gothic in words/music. What Gothic was before Joy Division, Cure, ect. Were they an influence perhaps?

If anyone is interested, there is a slow, grim version of 'Don't Fear The Reaper' here. Reminds me a lot of early Pink Floyd. The vocal is reminescent of Roger Waters.

This message is for the 20 somethings...the music this bands made was complete with the people going back in the day...without the rebelion and kaos my generation had and felt it looses something...this new generation sucks there all a bunch of monkeys trying to look cool, they even fucked up the Ray Ban´s Wayfarer look.

" The pop metal-sleaze metal bands of the 70s, 80's and 90's were concerned with peddling their gumball plastic music and getting girls because they were in a band. There were 100's of them and they all sounded alike. They are a stain on the history of modern music.

There was an alternative to the aforementioned cheap, tasteless, classless bands. The Cure, Jane's Addiction, Violent Femmes, Sonic Youth, Chritian Death, ect. Those bands wrote about real life issues and focused on making music into an artform. "

Nick Drake, kinda like an English James Taylor who never got to get old or sell out *eh hum*. "Pink Moon" is his best, just his vocal and guitar and gentle eccentricity, slightly haunted. No one else sounds or writes like him. Makes for good company on a rainy day or a windy night when you're alone. Put on a pot of tea. You might even listen to it twice in a row. I love mournful music, and I have a particular weakness for suicidal musicians especially the ones that died too early to suck...*cough*

whoever said they wish Jane's could be a supergroup is a moron who doesn't know the definition of "supergroup"

SUPERGOUP
from wikipedia
"In the late 1960s, the term supergroup was coined to describe "a rock music group whose performers are already famous from having performed individually or in other groups."[1][2] Supergroups tend to be short-lived, often lasting only for an album or two. Additionally, supergroups are often formed as side projects that are not intended to be permanent.

Some of the most well-known supergroups include: 1960s groups Cream, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Blind Faith; 1970s groups Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Humble Pie, Cactus and Bad Company; the 1980s & 1990s groups The Firm, Traveling Wilburys, Mad Season, Damn Yankees and The Highwaymen; the 2000s-era bands A Perfect Circle, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave, Transplants, and Zwan.

Kennedy was never charged and never paid for his crime - until this morning.

Saratoga Springs police officer sprayed, sickened with LSD while making arrest

August 17, 2009 10:58 AM

A Saratoga Springs police officer had to be hospitalized Saturday after he was splashed with LSD while trying to make an arrest during a street drug investigation, the Saratoga Springs Police Department said.

Police officers working a street-level counter-drug detail attempted to arrest 30-year-old Todd Buchas of Ballston Spa Saturday evening when Buchas ran from police, attempting to discard apparent drug evidence as he ran.

After a short foot chase, police caught up with Buchas near the public library. He became combative with responding officers and resisted their attempts to arrest him.

Police say Buchas had some small plastic eyedropper-type containers and began spraying liquid from them, some of which landed on the hands of the investigator who was helping arrest Buchas.

Shortly after Buchas was placed under arrest, the investigator sprayed with LSD began to feel the effects of the drug. He felt ill and was taken to the Saratoga Emergency Room, where he spent hours recovering, said SSPD Lt. Gregory Veitch.

You should have stayed in high school. Your knowledge of commodities is embarrassing not to mention completely inaccurate for the point you were trying so desperately to make. Americans spend more on art than any other industrialized nation. Take some of your millions and enroll in a local community college or university, it's amazing what a proper education can do for someone as anxious to be cerebral as you.

Anonymous said...

That was a bit snotty, don't you think? Is the pinnacle that you strive for really just a perch from which you can sit and make snide comments to those who you believe to be of lesser intellect/education? One can be educated and intelligent without being particularly creative or inspired, and vice versa, and this fact should go a long way in our considerations of an individual's value, and the level of respect with which they deserve to be treated. One can also be well-educated, yet be completely bitter and rotten inside. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt, and hope that your post was a brief and uncommon lapse of character due to some unknown variable(s). I'd like very much to think that you are not completely wretched, and that perhaps, with time and reflection, you will see the error in your ways.

If The Dead didn't write Morning Dew, who did, do you know?

Corgan is smart.

1. beginning at the grassroots playing intimate venues and locally owned coffeehouses which harbor a nice hippie vibe

2. he displays good taste with song selection

3. he's not afraid to take chances-an entire of classics with no pumpkins songs

4. he picked dave to join him

5. he returned to his very early pyschedelic roots

6. tickets sold out in 2 minutes

7. no electronic crap

Dave is doing a lot of nice guitar flourishes in "Morning Dew". I can hear his style injected into the song which he embellished a lot. I am starting to think it is he who made "Summertime Rolls" so special. And he is the one who brought to the table the mellow, hippie acoutic vibe into Janes.
