the thom yorke solo show at the orpheum sunday night is still resonating for me. it was a really exciting event to be a part of. if i had to choose only one criticism of our current musical climate it would be that there doesnt seem to be alot of special musical events anymore. bands are either doing the verizon-something-or-other-theater or they are doing some contrived performance, in some contrived space, in some forced attempt at being different or unusual. these events often end up so 'artistic' that it seems more like marketing. in contrast, the orpheum show was a timeless display of the power of a really great musical experience. there was an electricity to the darkness before the band came out. we were then witness to a really pure experience of music. music. it was about the intrinsic substance of bands and musicianship. there was obvious great virtuosity but was not jammy, showy or particularly well polished; mistakes were made and unfinished song sketches were performed by yorke with just vocal and guitar or vocal and piano. a friend put it well saying that it was an unusual combination of being a really artistic evening without being at all pretentious.

it was a really impressive lineup of musicians. for purposes of full disclosure i must admit that flea is my friend and i am admittedly biased in favor of him but still...he is such an amazing player now. he continues to inspire me to become a better musician. but everyone on stage was an accomplished musician. some famous, some not. in an age when people are mixing and matching different celebrities for marketing reasons, or to combine catalogs, it was really nice to see a 'supergroup' built by shared virtuosity and musicianship.

if a listing music industry wants a new generation to care about supporting a music industry. create musical experiences that deserve their support. these evenings are timeless, transcending not only time, but also current musical styles and taste. i know. i saw flipper club lingerie and x at the whisky-a-go-go over two decades ago. i will now add thom yorke at the orpheum amongst all the others on that list.

I don't think he meant to anger the fans but he got married and had a wife and kids to support the priorities changed cuz he had to put food on the table for 3 other peeps so the direction turned commericial with Strays. I don't think Strays #2 will be much diffrent. You know the pop(boring) writing and the over compressed slick sound.

Stereophile mentioned Strays as the perfect example of a poor, overly-compressed sound. To compare and contrast, I turned on Beggars Banquet, then Darkside of the Moon then the White Album and boom, there was a rock sound, real drums, real bass, real DYNAMICS. Strays - not really a surprise, just more of a let down. I'd like to see one of my favorite bands get better than the Britney Spears treatment - at least for one record.

His heart just wasnt into it anymore his mind and body were on the dance floor boogying down, break dancing and spinning the beats, not wasting time making an alternative rock album.

He resented pressure from fans and record labels to make another Jane's Addiction record. He resented the unreasonable demands to make something as classic as Ritual and Nothing Shocking when the inspiration left him in the early 90's; after all this is 2010 and he was an aging rocker, how could he identify with things he was doing when he was a youngster.

He had no desire to party, do drugs and take trips to Indonesia, get down with the natives and shamans and sit on a mountain top doing hatha yoga. Those activities were best left in his past life. He is a superhero now he has risen beyond all his former pursuits.

He had a wife and two children to raise and malls waiting to be shopped at. He had private jets to catch and fashion shows to attend and dance parties to show off in new designer clothing lines.....

Eric Avery Leaves Jane’s Addiction – Reprise

www.popmatters.com/pm/post/121733-eric-avery-leaves-janes-addiction-reprise/

"Although Avery leaving the band is not unprecedented, the unconfirmed addition of Duff McKagen to the line-up might raise some eyebrows among certain fans. He’s a logical choice given he’s a fine bassist who’s friends with Dave Navarro, but considering the roles Jane’s Addiction and Guns ‘N Roses occupied in the context of the late 1980s L.A. music scene (the former the quasi-bohemian transgressive figureheads of its underground sphere, the latter the macho bad-boy embodiment of Sunset Strip sleaze), not to mention his recent tenure in hard rock traditionalists Velvet Revolver, the connotation of drafting McKagen into the band seems like another betrayal of what Jane’s was supposed to stand for. Jane’s Addiction has always placed its weight on the idea that it’s a visionary group, but time after time events like this make that notion seem like mere window-dressing for typical rock ‘n roll operating procedure. "

I can say with utmost assurance with the write lineup of guest vocalists including some of Avery's voice, his next one will blow Strays II out of the Water. I can't wait.

You know who plays a mean acoustic guitar is Daniel Ash. Man that fucker knows how to make an acoustic guitar sound like a million dollars. Maybe its something to do with the wrist action when he strums the chords. I saw him and Love & Rockets play at Lolla a couple years back and I was impressed. That guy exudes the punk attitude more than any other star out there. It oozes out of every cell in his body. He was wearing leather and a pirates hat with a feather in it but it wasn't lame it was like fuck you I rule. Too bad the guys in Janes can't at least come close. I mean ya they tried at Oz I'll give em that much but they still have a ways to go in proving themselves worthy again on record.

Can Navarro do the pastoral fingerpicking style like Daniel ash did in "Slice of Life" and "American Dream"? I never heard him do it. Its harder to master thats why many guitarists don't try it. Navarro is a fine electric soloist but in the area of acoustical, Ash smokes him. Tone and playing technique both.

Not because you say you don't do drugs (who cares if you do or don't), but because you had to say that like a pussy because you either think it would negatively affect your image or get you in trouble with your friends and family. And you demean someone who chooses to take a psychoactive substance into their bodies to change their consciousness. Its been done for thousands of years and mushrooms are considered sacraments in many native cultures. Its only in America with your phony hypocritical drug war(CIA shipping in narcotics) that drug users are the scourge of society.

song yet to be sung could have been porno's 3rd album. in interviews with perry in 96 he talks about things witch show up in lyrics of song yet to be sung. 'mirror of the king' with its reverse, beatlesque efx was drafted around that time. if Perry releases the vocals and keys as separate individual tracks...i could remix...

1. add acoustic guitar rhythms with sophisticated chord structures
2. adjust some of the tempos
3. leave the vocals exactly as is
4. replace all beats with genuine drums
5. add in more efx
6. delete unnecessary samples
7. add in other instruments like flute, violin, tampura, piano

I want said...

I want Jane's Addiction to be put to sleep Strays was contrived and Duff is a retard.

I want Eric Avery to get a real singer and put a band together.

I want Dave Navarro to join the Smashing Pumpkins.

I want Perry Farrell to ditch the Go All The Way, I like Etty's Tits Big crap start over and make the proper follow up to Song Yet To Be Sung.

I want Stephen Perkins and Pete DiStefano and to form a psy Jazz, world music project with a proper vocalist and record an album.

wow. had a crazy ja related dream last night. why am i dreaming about ja i dunno but i usually forget my dreams but not this one.
i was sitting in a medium sized room with ja rehearsing some new songs. i was completely unprepared for what i heard. not what i was expecting at all. nothing was like ja had done b4, they were in completely new territory. the only thing recogzible was perry's vocal. phat.

i was floored. i had expected to hear something like "just because". the music is still going round in my head and i'm trying best i can to capture what i heard and put it on tape because it was great. someday technology will enable humans to connect with a device that will record our dreams sound and image.

getting on to ja...
perry looked like a hick from the 1920's with rolled up long sleeved shirt, straw hat, brown beads round his neck. kind of like a funky new orleans street musician.
the first song started out with a melancholic harmonica melody with a funky backbeat. dave played acoustically like something off an early bob dylan record but more melodic. tears came to my eyes and the sad melody enveloped my senses. i was so taken by what i was hearing that i was in tears it was so emotional.

then as the song progressed it developed into something more aggressive and a slightly dark new orleans bent to it. perry sung like he did on the ja self titled album sort of like his voice on "my time" but the song was nothing like "my time" at all. perry's melody was very strong and kept building in intensity and he was telling a story and the look in his eyes, like a possessed man, it was like he was transported to a different place and living out those bizaare events he was singing about. think "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" film. amazing. a couple minutes into the song and perry was at full volume belting out a wicked melody like a psychobilly nigga. it was wild man. then it kind of ebbed and flowed intemixed with soft passages and building into wild crescendo. the closest i could decribe the music is like what you might hear a wacked out group of street musicians in New Orleans or Savannah play after dark. the next 2 songs were like the first and just as captivating. i know this dream had no basis in reality because eric was in the dream playing acoustic bass. shit.

you can't help but feel sorry for the wu-man, pf. on his twitter, facebook and his lyric he can't open his mouth without uttering words of praise to his pint sized wifey. sad to see a full grown man groveling like a little boy on his mother's skirt. but good for him he has a mother he calls his wifey. it is sad his mother killed herself when he was young but and his wifey now take the place of his mother.

techno music ruined him, rotted his music skill to the core. once a great maker of music reduced to whoring after a lesser form of music, a form of music requiring no talent whatsoever. techno is as useless as rap. but good for him he is happy and it isn't that a beautiful thing. not for us the listeners and longtime fan it is painful. very painful to watch read and hear his insanity. but for him and his silicone playmate, it is bliss :>(

Lol. I hear Ettie's breast milk is even more addictive than heroin. Problem is in this case her breast milk is a potent neurotoxin. The milk dumbed him down to such a degree.. he's even stupider than he was before he first met her. sucked off and swallowed the breast milk so much so there are not any brain cells left to kill off.

If his life is so wonderful as he brags and tries to make us believe on the net hehe, then why is the music so terrible? If life is really overflowing with bounty and goodness then it should bear good fruits, not rotten apples like Satellite Party.

Does anybody know when PF broke up with Casey 93-94??

Anonymous said...

Caey broke up with him in 1993. Strange enough it marked the most fertile creativity in his entire career, the 2 classic Porno For Pyros records. So no steady girlfriend, lots of drugs=awesome music. Some may disagree but Porno is superior to Janes. Porno still sounds modern. Janes sounds like old metal.

Fuck techno. Folk is the people's music. It's not about a particular sound; it's about making honest music. It is undergoing a massive rebirth. SoCal folk with the L.A. sensibility, drawing inspiration from the histories of the neighborhoods they live in, the natural beauty surrounding them and the mysterious currents that many feel are still reverberating from the '60s. This energy in turn has drawn even more artists and musicians to the West Coast.
It's an energy you can feel. People are being brought together by all this collaboration and friendship and art . . . and work!

We record our albums @ Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. The spirits which inhabit the canyon will guide your recording sessions if you are fortunate enough to be in tune with the vibrations.

"The ideal of an artist is to be established in a transcendent realm, beyond the limits of the senses. So the artist, or more precisely, the worshippers of fine arts, have to be spiritual aspirants. Only those who look upon everything of the world as Spirit can realize in everything a subtle, blissful, Transcendental Entity. The greater the artists' understanding of their kinship with God, the greater their art. Those who possess a creative faculty yet do not seek the Transcendental Entity, cannot create a worthy or successful work of art."

A key characteristic of solid songwriting is when a song sounds interesting after repeat listens and requires no beat or drums to sound good. I think Billy Corgan has achieved that in his latest song.

Anonymous said...

well bc figured out the truth. you don't need flashy guitars, flashy clothes nor pounding synth drums to get attention and respect. you just need to be real. write lyrics that mean something. write songs and sing them with emotion. thats all. the tards at rolling stone and spin will catch on. eventually.

Anonymous said...

best case scenario-ja does the right thing and calls it quits. they're honest with themselves and admit there hearts aren't into art making. the fans will understand

2nd best case scenario-duff declines to work with ja because of other commitments. if heaven should come down and all three have life changing relevations and the music suddenly becomes extraordinary...well then they find a suitable bassist who plays and writes like ea. they hire billy corgan as artistic consultant and devendra banhart to produce.
