the thom yorke solo show at the orpheum sunday night is still resonating for me. it was a really exciting event to be a part of. if i had to choose only one criticism of our current musical climate it would be that there doesnt seem to be alot of special musical events anymore. bands are either doing the verizon-something-or-other-theater or they are doing some contrived performance, in some contrived space, in some forced attempt at being different or unusual. these events often end up so 'artistic' that it seems more like marketing. in contrast, the orpheum show was a timeless display of the power of a really great musical experience. there was an electricity to the darkness before the band came out. we were then witness to a really pure experience of music. music. it was about the intrinsic substance of bands and musicianship. there was obvious great virtuosity but was not jammy, showy or particularly well polished; mistakes were made and unfinished song sketches were performed by yorke with just vocal and guitar or vocal and piano. a friend put it well saying that it was an unusual combination of being a really artistic evening without being at all pretentious.

it was a really impressive lineup of musicians. for purposes of full disclosure i must admit that flea is my friend and i am admittedly biased in favor of him but still...he is such an amazing player now. he continues to inspire me to become a better musician. but everyone on stage was an accomplished musician. some famous, some not. in an age when people are mixing and matching different celebrities for marketing reasons, or to combine catalogs, it was really nice to see a 'supergroup' built by shared virtuosity and musicianship.

if a listing music industry wants a new generation to care about supporting a music industry. create musical experiences that deserve their support. these evenings are timeless, transcending not only time, but also current musical styles and taste. i know. i saw flipper club lingerie and x at the whisky-a-go-go over two decades ago. i will now add thom yorke at the orpheum amongst all the others on that list.

Hi Eric- A very cool and pertinent observation you make. I'm real
glad you saw Yorke and the guys play what sounds like such a pure musical experience. Must have been an awesome to see/ hear Flea as well in that environment. Your post reminds me of how playing music for children is equally a pure and non pretentious, powerful and inspiring experience for the musician and the observer. Playing music for children has opened that door for me personally of playing in a pure musical moment and not in a superficial musical moment as you pointed out
there's a lot of out there these days.

How was Fever Ray?

I attended the recent ¡Bienvenidos Gustavo! concert (10/3/09) and Flea lead the Silverlake Conservatory band in 3 Stevie Wonder tunes: Visions, Higher Ground and I Wish.

It was a band of school kids, Keith Barry on viola and Flea. They sounded great! How sweet would it be to be in 9th grade, playing Higher Ground with Flea!

One thing that really impacted me was how impeccable Flea's time and groove are. I know that's a little like being impressed by how blue the sky is, but it is one thing for a bass player to make a band of pros sound great, and it is a whole other thing for the bass player to drive the groove of a bunch of kids who are not at a pro level yet.

The whole concert was pretty amazing. If you have a chance to hear a live performance of Beethoven's 9th, don't miss it. Especially if my wife is singing in the choir. :)

¡Bienvenidos Gustavo! was a free concert at the Hollywood Bowl. 18,000 people at a free concert in L.A.

Eric, I believe that with the advent of acid, we discovered a new way to think, and it has to do with piecing together new thoughts in the mind. Why is it that people think it's so evil? What is it about it that scares people so deeply, even the guy that invented it, what is it? Because they're afraid that there's more to reality than they have confronted. That there are doors that they're afraid to go in, and they don't want us to go in there either, because if we go in we might learn something that they don't know. And that makes us a little out of their control.

NOBEL I agree with you. Besides,
the Nobel Peace Prize is irrelevant and Obama’s award is a sideshow.

World peace, as promoted by Hitler, Kissinger, and now Barack Obama, the “anti-war candidate” who is in the process of radically expanding he occupation of Afghanistan and enlarging the Pentagon’s policy of killing villagers in Pakistan and anybody else the U.S. government declares to be in league with a CIA-created terrorist group.

Seeing the original line up 3 times this year (echoplex, detroit.. thanks for playing Obvious by the way..... and upcoming NOLA) is more than I could have ever hoped for anyway. And I am thankful. See you in the Park.

Jane's need to change it the fuck up. Not a little, a lot. I wish they'd stop thinking of it as their day job and meal ticket, and instead get creative. Maybe they're secretly getting creative. Maybe the upcoming shows will see them at least delving a little deeper into their existing catalogue. Otherwise this whole deal is gonna get stale fast, and that would be a shame, what with the real band finally together.

P.S. take some inspiration from the interesting stuff big shots like Yorke and Flea and Corgan have been doing. Take some risks.

Anonymous said...

If I were Janes tour manager I would help with the song selection. I would encourage something like this to spur more interest and get a buzz going

1. a day before the main gig i would book an appearance in a local coffee house and invite local radio/press. all acoustic, no distortion.

2. the main gig consist of 3-4 new cuts and random songs from the back catalog, nothing off limits. to spice things up and generate interest, older songs get different treatment. Such as a slow tempo acoustic "trip away", fast tempo "classic girl", electrified "slow divers", and a remake of "so what!" with Eric's input.

Jane's Addiction 'Trip Away' Slow Version.

Track was EQ'd to allow Eric's bass to dominate as it should. Perry's voice was modified and lowered to reflect his current range and capabilities. The tempo was reduced to give it more groove and swing. Trip Away (slow version) Hope you like!

Paying tribute to the guys who played it several times this year.

Avery Master said...

On the Obvious 'psy mix', the tempo was reduced a little to make it more intune with the vibrations while smoking a spliff. Perry's voice was lowered slightly and effect was added. The drums were boosted and the snare hits harder and deeper. The bass guitar was modified to sound more like a fretless bass. Some additional instrumentation was added in the intro to give more exotic atmosphere.

If there's any interest, I am thinking of doing a trippy mix of either Slow Divers, Classic Girl or Up The Beach.

Evry chapter covers a different topic, ranging from the culture itself, to very abstract physics and chemistry, showing very strange particles, plants, animals, and hominid creatures. Written and illustrated by the Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini. Extraordinary.

Hey Eric I was wondering if you ever got into the post apocalyptic folk genre? A lot of guys who love dark ambient, dark atmospheric, power electronics, classical and industrial musics also have an ear for the apocalytic, melancholic storytelling, lighter aspect of the p.apocalyptic.f

I think we are entering a time where nuclear holocaust is appearing on the horizon. Pink Floyd wrote about it in "Two Suns In The Sunset" and that was when the Soviet Union was still around. I think Israel is ready to attack Iran and will. I also think Russia will defend Iran and the USA and the UK will attack Russia and Iran. I believe it will go nuclear. I believe the US govt knows it and why they are using the US army within our own borders doing random traffic stops, acting as police at Sporting Events and doing random checkpoints on our highways to aclimate us. Troops from Canada, Mexico are also training on our soil. They also have FEMA (concentration) camps ready for when war breaks out. It doesn't look good and I hope I am wrong but I can't turn a blind eye to what the war-making, military industrial complex is up to. The elite need a third world war to bring in their agenda for global slavery. The have called for it in all their documents. It's very sick.

Jane's Addiction - My Time(psychotropic version)

#4 mix
Track was EQ'd in multiple layers to bring up the bass guitar and eliminate noise. Perry's voice was detuned slightly and the tempo was reduced. Drums and percussion were added to give the song much more "punch". Guitar and effects were overdubbed to allow a trippy atmosphere. A lot of work was done to the rough track to make it sound just right. Hope you guys like it!

Perry and Dave are wealthy men, they no longer have to depend on writing outstanding songs to survive. They no longer have the overwhelming desire for transcendence through music. Their wealth and fame is their aphrodisiac. Don't get me wrong, music is still fun for them but it takes a back seat to being a celebrity. They are satisfied in relying on the hard work and musical intelligence from their youth. The all emcompassing self motivation is gone unfortunately and will not return, barring some freak event and they become financially insolvent.

The one area Jane's has NOT touched on is the esoteric mood. The kind one feels when visiting strange, mysterious, far away lands or an out-of-body experience. I don't think they'll ever go there because they like to hang where it feels safe and secure.

Hi! Not a lot of people know about my original inspiration for the song "Chip Away." It was 1986, and I was sitting in my kitchen having a late-night snack. It was a tall glass of milk with some delicious Nabisco Chips Ahoy!® brand real chocolate chip cookies.

Chips Ahoy!® cookies are made with REAL chocolate chips, so you know that each cookie will deliver a blast of real chocolate flavor with every bite, and they're great for dunking!

So, remember, the next time you're strung out on dope and need a 3 AM pick me up, head down to your nearest convenience store and pick up some delicious Chips Ahoy!® brand cookies...from Nabisco! You may just write some weird angsty shit that you won't understand 20 years later!

Fuck, please, just buy the fucking things. I thought I had a lot of fucking clothes, but shit, my wife is in the running to be the next fucking Imelda Marcos. If I can't come up with more shoes, she'll fucking leave me, and I don't even know how to wipe my own ass anymore! Help me!

Prayer for Jane's

I pray for Jane's to be filled with the desire for excellence in music. I pray Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Avery will be filled with superhuman energy and wisdom as they move forward with album creation. I pray the white heavenly light will shine down upon them and lead them toward rising sun of brilliance. I pray their blinded eyes will be opened and they will see eye to eye in total agreement in their path. May the sounds coming from their instruments be pleasing to the ear. May the art they create be pleasing to the naked eye. I pray for a new renaissance to come about in their union. May they give birth to what is beautiful, splendid and shimmering. May they take heed the well meaning advice of their fans. zmay their music guide us toward the fourth dimension. I pray we may be grateful for the music they give to us as an offering of their toil. May the new music of Jane's bring peace and happiness to planet earth, the sun, the moon and the stars. May their songs be sung by many generations to come.
Amen.

-I like Janes as a band more now than previous. The skills are honed in. The bulls eye is hit more often than not. You guys like to complain because you are so busy comparing '09 to '91. The magic is with them my friends. The band are masterful entertainers. The subtleties are there if you PAY ATTENTION Jane's Addiction will reward you. Take For instance the EL CID ''Trip Away''.

youtube.com/watch?v=nlpYPP-u9Sg

In the video, watch the frequent eye contact between Eric & Perry, VERY crucial as a gauge. Eric & Perry are the masterminds and when they click, boy watch out! the earth is gonna SHAKE!

At 1:37-1:45 Dave does some improv guitar lines, very cool.

Perry makes all kinds of devilish faces and at 2:30 take a look at his mischevious expression. Classic! He is into it man.

At 3:15 Perry adds some improv vocal lines. Classic Perry Farrell, classic Janes move.

All the way through Eric is at the top of his game. Not to mention him playing ''Trip fucking Away''. Did anybody think this could happen? No.

Now for a little bit of trivia. David Bowie's Space Oddity album was originally released in the UK as Man Of Words, Man Of Music, but not released in the US at all. Only after the song 'Space Oddity' was released in the States as a single in 1972 and became a retarded hit, the album came out under the title Space Oddity, and the name's stuck ever since.

"Today, when a guy like Mick Jagger wants to "go modern", he brings in a corporate no-talent like Lenny Kravitz, ushers in drum machines, sets up a couple techno beats, and makes everything sound like a dance-crazy computer. That's called "keeping with the times".

No. Better for Dave and Perry to voluntarily submit to reprogramming- they shall undergo 6 months in a salt isolation tank, the temperature of the womb, on hallucinogens with earphones on given special commands for 6 months. When they come out of it a new set of values, attitudes and beliefs will be present. Only then will Jane's Addiction 2010 be a viable entity.

Why is there a power struggle within Jane's? Are they children? Why can't it be a communal project with everyone throwing their songs into a pot and and have a producer sort them out. Eric writes a full song(music/lyrics) and Perry sings it. Perry writes a song, Eric plays bass over it. Dave writes a song, Perry sings it, Eric overdubs his bass. It doesn't have to be complicated. Eric's solo ideas should become Jane's songs with Perry singing them and vice versa. Come on dudes, get it together or pack it in.

Well I would've picked a different producer that was part of the problem I mean these guys need a counselor and a genius engineer all in one. Trent is not known for his producing he is known for Head Like a Hole. He kind of does producing on the side, like a B-producer. Alan Moulder is a quality producer, Trent is just a guy who helps struggling unknown bands or really old guys like Bowie who lost their prominence. So bad move with Trent but thats in the past they still have time to pick someone better thats for sure.

JA has 30+ tunes to choose from. I really do like how JA does almost the same 12tunes every gig. Chip away was a nice addition but don't change it up so much there guys its killing me! I'm glad JA have not come up with any new tuneful creations because that would break the monotony. Monotony is sweet. The monotony must remain an exclusive JA signature in the 2000's and beyond.

Why do you have to make it so, so, so, so, so, so, ob-vi-ous...that Jane's is a washed-up retarded joke? Oh no!

Anonymous said...

Radiohead's great, especially that "I'm a Creep" song that they wrote about Perry Farrell. I heard that "Kid A" is about a giant turd that Thom Yorke pooped out and caused his wonky eye to go all fucked up.

What was the name of the quack therapist Metallica hired to tour several years ago? Jane's Addiction should hire that guy and when they go to record, bring him in the studio and film the whole shindig and put it out on MTV. That would be some funny shit!!!
Seeing them argue and go into temper tantrums trying to record a couple notes.

That has got to be the most intelligent fucking thing I every heard, what a good idea. Jane's is nothing but a nostalgia act.

JA are caught in a tight spot, Procrastination can only work for a time,
If they record and release they are under heavy scutiny from industry critics, difficult to pull it off (take a look at "Go Away White" by Bauhaus, a complete disaster.
If they don't record and release they quickly pitfall into the oldies nostalgia only category without winning over the next generation of music fans, the latter of which is becoming evident each passing day...

Bauhaus was never widely popular in the USA. Jane's is a distinctly American tradition. Plus that new Bauhaus cd was a half assed lazy attempt and was destined for the trash heap before it even began.

I was just thinking what if something happened to Perry and he was no longer with us. I would feel bad for dissing him for not living up to my selfish expectations of good music.
So I'm going to cease and desist all Perry related insults and bite my tongue every time he does something that pisses me off. So Perry if ur reading this I'll suck you off once to make up for it.

Ritual said...

at this moment Eric....you should leave Janes for good.

Anonymous said...

are you coming on to me mrs. robinson?

Authorship said...

I think Jane's Addiction did not write ritual, nothings shocking and s/t all by themselves.

They played on the records but an unknown secret author wrote or cowrote a bulk of the songs for them. The individual responsible for penning the songs has probably died and cannot help them anymore. Back in the 80's they paid the secret writer to give the band the sole copyright ownership.

That is why Strays sucked so bad and they had to use outside writers like David J, Bob Ezrin, Marytn LeNoble to help the desperate situation. Satellite Party had to use outside writers as well.

I believe the two songs they wrote with Trent came out so bad they are embarrassed to release them.

Its not the "personality conflicts" or "creative differences" they claim at all. It is because they, like Milli Vanilli didn't write there own songs and cannot rise to the level they are credited with.

If current art & music is a reflection of the general health of a society, ours is sick, decadent and on it's death bed. Decadence is the society's decay, its fall from a position of strength and prosperity to a state of weakness and ruin. America is the new Rome and like Rome we will be crushed.

Although the constitution of the USA was never officially repealed, the legal measures taken by the Bush and Obama administrations and Congressional elites in their terms, commonly known as Gleichschaltung ("coordination") meant that the government could legislate contrary to the constitution. The constitution became irrelevant, therefore 2009 is usually seen as the end of the Republic and the beginning of Obama's "Fourth Reich".

I dig Casey's style, she's got class. From now on when I speak of good art I am referring to Casey's work.

After checking out Casey's blog it's blatantly obvious where the art in Jane's came from.

"This girl keeps staring at me over her thick green book and I’m getting all constricted around the throat. She’s wearing one of those blue stretchy kind of tops with no straps. The kind you just pull straight down and everything becomes instantly available. She seems to be taking a long time to finish her salad."

Brilliant in its simplicity.

Is it true Eric you have parted ways w/ Jane's Addiction and your replacement is the forgettable Chris Chaney? He is listed on the Bellyup Aspen gig for New Years. It looks to be a yuppies only show @ $575 a ticket. I think I'll pass.

"$575.00 Reserved Seating (Guarantees a seat in reserved section)

i predict after the feb 2010 dates

1) eric is gone into hibernation and then early retirement
2) corporate JA will continue, go into the studio with chaney and record a record full of "superhero" and "bring the mood" type crap
3) interest in the band wanes
4) JA self destructs

El Bicho said...

Yeah, I saw that Aspen thing too. Very sad. It's obvious the end is near once again.

Sorry it didn't work out, but at least they gave it a shot. Was hoping there would be some new magic, but after Trent said what a mess it was and the only releases were new versions of old songs, I wasn't holding my breath.

Hope to hear from the foursome about what happened and wish them all well.

What the other 3 guys did regardless if Eric was cool with it or not, is rude. So Eric can't go they say fine, we'll get a replacement. The machine moves on to amass wealth in one of the most stuck up, snobby elitist towns in the USA. I'm afraid Farrell is moving in these types of circles and has changed him forever, and for the worst. Money and power easily corrupts and corrupts absolutely.

While Perry is prepping the band for Strays part II, just remember the words of LeNoble the Great.

DA: Do you think even before hearing it(Strays) produced that the band felt it wouldn’t stand up to the previous works?

Martyn LeNoble: It’s not very good compared to previous works, but that was almost a given. I had to let go of that idea, because those are three big records to try and match or one-up. I don’t think anyone felt that would happen. I think that was part of firing me. I think maybe they were trying to fix it or trying to do something, hoping that it would change.

DA: Most fans feel like Bob Ezrin did a really shitty job producing Strays.

Martyn LeNoble: Yeah, he fucked up the Jane’s sound, and I’d say that to his face.

DA: Speaking of Jane’s and getting fired, would you be willing to elaborate as to what happened?

ML: Okay, I got fired in Japan at the Fiji Festival. I was totally blindsided. I really had no idea it was about to happen. I think maybe even Perry only had a slight inclination he was going to do it until it happened. Ultimately, I can tell you it was not done in a nice way. I can tell you that. It sucked (laughs)! What hurt the most was losing some great friends. I can understand if things don’t work out but the friendships that got damaged because of the way it was done made it miserable.

Flea did a better job, blows EA away on every level

Anonymous said...

No. This is the order of supremity

1. Eric Avery

209. Flea
210. Martyn

510. Chaney

Anonymous said...

Avery and Martyn have a few things in common in regards to music. Besides their excellent bass skills, they both write compelling music with a strong emotional component. They can connect with the listener on an emotional level. I am speaking of Help Wanted and Martyn's demo tape.

Perry's music has fallen through the cracks because he has lost the ability to connect. His melodies and song structure/chord progressions don't show a sense of emotion. They don't have a light and a dark side. They don't show any hint of sorrow, pain or the the human struggle. No one but his trust fund baby friends can connect with the lyrics. It's Prozac music devoid of emotion and doesn't reflect reality. It reflects a world of make believe where all there is to life is going to parties with plastic people and unapologetic materialism.
